November 2014 Artist in Residence Program
Grier’s Gallery @ Novant Hemby Children’s Hospital
Magic happened the week of November 3rd... Hearts soared, faces smiled and amazing art was created during the very first Grier’s Gallery :: Artists in Residence Program championed by Rohr Rockstars. Families treated at Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital and Novant Blume Hematology and Oncology came together to connect, to be inspired, and to create. The result was fifteen vibrant and inspiring canvases created by the participants ranging in age from 3-22.
November's Art Programming at Grier's Gallery was lead by local artist Annemarie Weekley. Ms. Weekley worked with the artists to create pieces that reflected what made them feel happy and what they saw as blessings in their lives. Using abstract art as the starting point, the artists learned how to represent their thoughts and feelings and ideas using color, texture and shape. The background color on the pieces represent the color that the artists associated with happiness. The rest of the piece uses shapes and colors and texture to tell a story - their story. All involved were amazed by the joy, the peace, and the comfort that comes when children are given opportunities to be creative. You could see the pride in every stroke, the intention of every color choice. It was amazing.
In celebration of the inaugural group of artists for Grier’s Gallery, Sozo Gallery in uptown Charlotte is showcasing their work through the end of December. On Friday, November 14th from 5:30-8:30, the public is invited to view the works as well as meet the young artists. Prints and note cards will be available and donations welcome.
THIS is how we start the holiday season - a season of giving thanks.
